Long-lasting companions from Matt & Nat
With stylish, fashionable handbags, backpacks and wallets from Matt & Nat, you can make a statement for the environment without compromising on looks or durability. At Matt & Nat, sustainability is a top priority. The brand specialises in accessories made from vegan materials using eco-friendly production methods. Matt & Nat handbags stand out with their timeless, minimalist design. Rather than chasing every trend, the brand remains true to its distinctive style, which continues to feel modern and relevant even years later. Thanks to thoughtful design, Matt & Nat creates practical bags that are also hard-wearing. Every model is rigorously tested for quality and durability to ensure it lasts as long as possible – further reducing its environmental impact. The brand also encourages upcycling, so that used but still intact bags are given a second life instead of being thrown away.
Live beautifully – sustainability at Matt & Nat
Matt & Nat's core values include recognising humanity, individual creativity and positive energy in everyone, while also embracing social responsibility. For this reason, the company maintains close relationships with its manufacturing partners and works to ensure working conditions that meet the SA8000 certification standard. But this is just one part of Matt & Nat’s sustainability mission. From the very beginning, environmental protection has been the brand’s main driving force. The aim is to give something back to the planet through sustainable production. That’s why Matt & Nat is constantly exploring even more eco-friendly ways of making bags. Each new season brings collections that place even less strain on nature. For example, since 2007 the lining of every bag has been made entirely from recycled plastic bottles. True to its strictly vegan philosophy, the brand avoids leather and other animal-derived materials altogether. Instead, it primarily uses high-quality faux leathers made from polyurethane (PU) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC). There are also collections that use cork, rubber, nylon or linen for the outer materials.
The Matt & Nat brand
Contrary to popular belief, the name Matt & Nat does not come from two founders – it’s short for material & nature. Founder Inder Bendi began experimenting with a vegan lifestyle as early as the 1990s, long before it was considered mainstream and when suitable products were hard to come by. The idea for Matt & Nat came to him in 1995 while studying at the University of Montreal. In a class he initially didn’t want to take, he was tasked with creating a business plan and attempting to secure funding for it. Although he wasn’t successful in securing the funds and received only an average grade, he decided to abandon his law studies and pursue his dream of founding a company dedicated to sustainable, vegan bags. In 2001, he joined forces with current owner and CEO Manny Kohli. Since then, Matt & Nat has grown into the leading brand for vegan handbags, shoes and accessories, worn by celebrities such as Natalie Portman, Olivia Wilde, Tobey Maguire and Adrian Grenier. To give the brand’s typically classic handbag designs a fresh twist, young designers have been brought on board since 2015 to introduce new ideas to the range.
