Size as the most important purchase criterion
Your laptop needs to be stored in a way that ensures a snug fit—otherwise it may slide around or even fall out. So be sure to choose a notebook bag that matches your device, even if a 17-inch bag might theoretically hold a 13-inch laptop. It’s best to measure the depth, length and width of your notebook and compare those dimensions with the specifications of your chosen bag. In general, a 15-inch notebook bag will also accommodate a 15.4-inch laptop. Be careful not to overfill the bag—this can put excessive pressure on the device and potentially damage the screen. Our recommendations regarding suitable laptop sizes can be found in each product description.
Notebook briefcases
The classic model features a rectangular landscape format, adjustable shoulder strap and a short handle. Leather versions look particularly elegant—some notebook bags don’t even appear to be designed for transporting tech. But looks aside, compartment layout also matters. Notebook briefcases typically include a document pocket for A4 papers. Other practical features often include credit card slots and a key holder. Briefcases with removable incase compartments are especially versatile: removing the laptop section creates extra space for office supplies, and the inner compartment can be used as a separate laptop sleeve. These models are made from genuine leather or high-quality imitation leather.
Notebook messenger bags
Messenger bags with a laptop compartment are also designed in A4 format and come with an adjustable shoulder strap. Larger models include a padded shoulder section for greater comfort. Most notebook messenger bags feature a flap closure and are also referred to as courier bags due to their shape. These bags are available in a wide range of materials: from vintage-style leather and faux leather models to sporty designs in nylon, canvas and tarpaulin. Practical shoulder bags offer plenty of space for work essentials like pens, smartphones or notebooks. Some models include an expansion zip for adjustable volume.
Notebook sleeves
If you don’t need to carry much extra equipment, a simple notebook sleeve may be all you need. These slim bags are perfect for compact devices with screen sizes up to 15 inches. The classic sleeve has no handles or straps and closes with a zip that runs along the edges. You can carry the sleeve under your arm or place it inside another bag. Because they fit tightly around the device, they are also known as sleeves. Basic models have no extra compartments—just a main section. Alternative versions come with a front slip pocket or multiple external pockets for small items like headphones, USB sticks and more. Premium models feature pen loops, cable and charger compartments, and additional pockets. The most common materials for notebook sleeves are leather, polyester and felt.
Features of travel-friendly models
Notebook bags with trolley straps can be attached to the telescopic handle of a suitcase. Some also include a laundry compartment, a padded tablet/iPad pocket, a valuables compartment and an address tag. Certain models come with bottle holders and umbrella straps. Many travel-oriented notebook bags also include an RFID-protected pocket for chip cards. Some feature a unique ID code or proprietary tracking system that allows you to digitally locate the bag—even if it gets lost.
